First Special Talk of 2018!

Examining a topic that many of us often struggle with – the longing to be satisfied. Can we be satisfied? Where would we find the answer to our deepest longings?

After enjoying a delicious MYO gyros dinner together, the talk was initiated by us taking a survey on what experiences we've had that left us unfulfilled. Then our speaker, John, acknowledged that we do have longings, quoting previous historical figures, such as Blaise Pascal who noted that there was a vacuum in the heart of every man that can only be filled by God himself.

Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
— John 4:13-14

John then took us through a story in the Bible about a Samaritan woman at a well who Jesus encounters (John 4:5-26). As the woman had tried to find something to quench her soul’s thirst, we could identify with her, that the things we’ve tried to fill our lives with – whether it be romance, achievements, or the like – only left us thirsty again.

Through examining Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman, we realized that all her failed attempts to find satisfaction never gave her what she wanted, and Jesus wanted her to find true life and satisfaction in Him. John shared that we were created to have deep longings filled (Ecclesiastes 3:11), and ultimately filled by the One we were created to worship.

...I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
— John 10:10

It was indeed a special talk that got us thinking about our lives, and afterwards, we headed off to a gym for our first sports night of the semester!

Many of us sweat off the stress of the week in volleyball, basketball, soccer, and ultimate frisbee – only to come together in the end for an intense class battle. Each class took turns at the rope for a tug o’ war competition, taking us back to elementary and middle school days of rope burns and heaving war cries. But the freshmen surprisingly conquered over the other classes! Were they satisfied with the win? Try asking them when you see them next time and let us know. 😊
